Nick Padmore To Race Historic Formula One at Spa
Monday 16th September 2013
British racing driver, Nick Padmore, has announced he will be racing in the Breitling Super Ocean ? Replica FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium this weekend.
Having developed the car throughout the year with owner, Max Smith Hilliard, and the Hampshire-based WDK Motorsport squad, Reigate's Padmore has been given the opportunity to step up to a race seat at this weekends' historic Spa Six Hours meeting.
The iconic 1976 Williams FW05, originally run by Walter Wolf Racing and raced by motorsport legend, Jacky Ickx, and Italian Arturo Merzario, will be joined by a field of Grand Prix cars, built between 1968 and 1978, for two 25-minute races through Belgium's Ardennes Forest.
Alongside Padmore in the sister WDK Motorsport entry will be Max Smith Hilliard in the 1977 John Player Special Lotus 77 of Gunnar Nilsson, and who also raced the Williams in July's Silverstone Classic.
"I have to say a huge thank you to Max for giving me this fantastic opportunity. It's going to be an amazing feeling to actually be racing a Grand Prix car at my favourite circuit.
"These cars rely on so much driver input and provide such close racing - they are an incredible thrill to drive.
"We've just completed a successful two-day test at Jerez and everyone in the team is prepared and looking forward to this weekend.
"I'm continually impressed with the professionalism and efficiency of WDK Motorsport - together we've really made progress with the cars.
"We should have a solid weekend at Spa and I know everyone will give 110% to take as much as we can and move forward to the next stage."
The Spa meeting comes as Historic Formula One hits the spotlight with the recent release of Ron Howard's movie, Rush, which focuses on the World Championship battle of the 1976 season, and used a selection of the cars that will be raced at Spa during filming.
