Rob Bell has secured drives with two top level teams for an assault on three 2009 sportscar titles – the FIA GT championship, the Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24 Hours race. Bell, double Le Mans Series GT2 champion, will drive a Ferrari 430 GT2 racer with CRS Racing in FIA GT and contend with the same model of car with JMW Motorsport in the Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Bell says of his upcoming season, “I’m really pleased to have secured two top flight drives, both with highly competitive teams. JMW Motorsport is a new and exciting entrant in the Le Mans Series, but many of the elements are familiar to me so we’ll be looking to be dominating the GT2 class right from the off. However, I reckon this series will be even more competitive, so it’ll be a tough challenge and one that I am relishing. CRS Racing is very professional and after a strong debut season, will, I’m sure, be challenging for race wins and the GT2 title.
“I’m aiming to take both championship titles with the two teams, but I also hope to be contesting my third Le Mans event with JMW Motorsport, who will be putting in an entry for this ultimate endurance event. Pulling off victory in this as well as taking the two championship titles would be some feat, but I’m out there to win, and I reckon it would be one for the history books!”
The Newcastle-born British driver is one of the leading current sportscar drivers. He joined CRS Racing for the 2008 season, the team’s debut in the FIA GT Championship. Partnering with Andrew Kirkaldy, his team mate from last year, the duo will be aiming to improve on last year’s success when they scored two wins.
Team JMW will be a new name in the 2009 Le Mans Series, although the car, mechanics and engineering personnel will be experienced professionals who worked with Bell last season. The team has the backing of Dunlop, starting the pre-season test programme in Estoril next month.
Bell concludes of his 2009 plans, “It’s great to have such an exciting package of racing ahead of me and I’m keen to be back racing again. As well as these drives I’m hoping to finalise outings at Sebring 12 Hours and Petit Le Mans. Of course if I can fit in any other racing I’m up for that too!”
Last season Bell secured the GT2 Drivers and Constructors Championships in the Le Mans Series, as well as racing in the GT2 category of the Le Mans 24 hours race and the 2008 FIA GT Championship.
