Geddie Disappointed with Season Opener
Saturday 4th April 2009
The cover came off the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Brands Hatch this weekend with Aberdeen's Glynn Geddie coming away from Race 1 with a fine 3rd place finish in the Pro-Am 1 category, and 8th overall.
Qualifying saw Team Parker Racing's Geddie show his pace by putting the 911 GT3 on the second row of the grid in 4th position for Race 1 with a time of 47.325 seconds - less than two tenths off the pole-sitter, team mate Tim Bridgman's time.
"Traffic was a big problem out there and I didn't really get a clear track", commented Geddie. "I set my best time on my first run but from then on the track just got slower because of the temperature. Hopefully though, we can make an early attack in the race".
In Race 1 the white, black and red Apex Tubulars-backed car driven by Geddie was slow off the line and let a place go by the time the field got to Paddock Hill Bend, but he didn't let that deter him and immediately went on the hunt to regain 4th.
The safety car was deployed after contact was made between Anthony Reid and Jake Roszenweig, forcing the pair out of contention and giving a frustrated Geddie a tough time getting heat into his tyres as the field slowed down. Once the lights came off the safety car and it pulled into the pits, the Scot ran wide as the cars dived into Turn 1 with cold tyres, giving the opportunity for three cars to get past him as he lacked exit speed going up the hill to Druids - yet displaying great skill as he fought to keep the number 8 car on the tarmac.
From then on it was too late in the race to do much else other than bring the car home safely and pick up as many points as he could for the opening of his 2009 campaign - settling for 8th overall but snatching the last step of the podium with 3rd in the Pro-Am 1 class.
"Of course I'm disappointed with the result in today's race. We had great pace and I was all over the top four cars until the safety car came out. The heat just left my tyres while we sat behind the safety car and I made a small mistake coming into Paddock when we got racing again, ran wide, and three guys shot by. I did come away with the second fastest lap in the race which demonstrates our competitiveness but it's little consolation.
"The team will be working hard, as ever, to get the car prepared for Race 2 tomorrow, so we'll see what happens - hopefully we won't have a repeat of today!"
Race 2, which commences at 3.05pm tomorrow (Sunday), will see Geddie line up in 5th on the grid, and you can catch all the action unfold live on ITV4 where coverage will begin at 11.45am.
